Between June and August, Hollywood dominated the Italian box office, with top-earning films such as Inside Out 2 (€46,000,000), Deadpool & Wolverine (€18,000,000), and Despicable Me 4 (€16,300,000 as of 26th September). Overall, cinemas generated a total revenue of €110,700,000, significantly surpassing that of 2023.
That’s why the autumn season is expected to be a huge success: people are more willing to visit theatres during this time of year, and the release of highly anticipated titles aims to capture an increasingly vast audience.
Currently showing is Vermiglio, directed by Maura Delpero, which has already won the Silver Lion at Venice and was selected as Italy’s entry for the Best Foreign Film category at the Oscars. This Rai Cinema production once again highlights Rai’s commitment to quality. Internationally, the most anticipated release is the sequel to Joker, the 2019 Golden Lion winner and the second-highest-grossing film of that year. Joker: Folie à Deux, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, is now in theatres as of October 2. On October 24, Parthenope debuts—a stunning modern epic that celebrates the myths and legends of ancient Naples and marks Paolo Sorrentino’s return to directing.
Looking ahead, excitement is building for Gladiator 2, featuring a new generation of warriors, and Wicked, the adaptation of the beloved musical that reveals the untold story of Oz’s most feared witch—both arriving in theatres in November.
